Blog - Life as a DJ

Posted: Wednesday 22nd August 2018 By: Andrew Broughton | Read Time = 1 mins Views: 4015

The life of a DJ is often viewed as just someone who plays music, but what goes on behind the scenes?

A couple of weeks ago I looked at what goes on behind the DJ booth to give an insight to what us DJs get up to. So this time I thought I'd look at the admin and preparations that go into the night before we start playing the music.

Back at home the work continues with lots of admin to make sure I know where I'm playing and what music has been requested. This is the boring part that not many people enjoy. But it's an essential chore.

For each event we need to sort the equipment and load/unload. Although luckily I've found a little helper recently who takes great joy in helping me unload; William was very proud to show off how much he could lift by picking up the speakers. And I must say I was impressed!

We also need to make sure the equipment is maintained and regularly have them tested (what's often referred to as PAT testing).

The more fun things include exploring new music and practicing on our equipment. My children love it when I drag out the lights so we can have a party in the lounge. And even little Sam enjoys scratching on my controller.

Every few months I enjoy attending the SEDA shownights, an event organised by DJs for DJs. Here we get to see new products in action and share experiences and advice.

So it's not all bad.
